The introductive section (Basic Features) has the Berube brothers, Donald and Daniel founders of noisybrain.Productions, LLC, introducing the Canon XH-A1/G1 on the external side (buttons, switches, etc…) and with a first look to the camera. This section is useful for those who still don’t have the camera or for those who are coming form a consumer camera and can be disoriented by the amount of buttons and switches of these new cameras. The second and most important section (Advanced Features), the longest of the entire DVD, has Douglas Spotted Eagle introducing and explaining all the features of the camera from the first start to the advanced usage with, for example, Skin or Sky Details functions or Custom Presets. Here it is possible to watch a short piece of the DVD about the Skin Details function. Other than helping the beginner user to the first setup, Douglas gives useful suggestions and practical settings to the expert user also. I suggest to take advantage in particular of the hints about the setup of Custom Functions and Custom Display. There are also examples and hints to understand how to use the camera at its best. Obviously the DVD can provide only an overview of the camera, despite the lenght of video, and then it is necessary to expand the knowledge by using the camera and experimenting on field the things learned.
I have to mention that a couple of times there are audio/video out-of-sync which last some seconds, but the usability of the DVD is not affected too much. Finally, the last section, in which we find DSE explaining what is HDV, how it works and how to handle it, is interesting. A kind of video summary of the book, published by V.A.S.S.T. “HDV, What You Need To Know”. The video is especially useful to put a rest to some of the commonplaces that is easy to find on web forums and to take a first look at the HDV.
