Many skaters think that all helmets are the same and the only difference is their appearance. However, a decent skateboard helmet totally depends on the inside structures and it must meet some standards for multi-sport helmets such as the CPSC or the ASTM.

The CPSC certification is mainly used to judge products used for scootering and biking; therefore, any helmet that satisfies this standard can only handle a single impact. On the other hand, the ASTM certification requires a standard helmet to have a special foam together with a decent shell which can take several impacts once skaters fall.

Let's catch more articles about skateboards: The benefit of skateboarding for both people and society!

Typically, skateboard helmets only either satisfy the CPSC standards or none of them. Since skating contains so many risks which can lead to skull fractures or traumatic brain injuries, the best skate helmet had better have a dual-certified CPSC/ASTM.

Moreover, you can come across the EN 1078 certification when learning about different standards for skateboarding helmets. The EN 1078 is well-known for the European-based standard for skateboarding, roller skating, and bike riding but it has lower requirements than the two others.

Each of these standards has its own and unique requirements for testing with different levels of impact and how well the product can protect the users from external forces. If you are curious about these requirements, you visit the website of ASTM or CPSC for more details.

At this stage, I bet you must be surprised that all skateboard helmets distributed in the USA do not need to meet any standards to be eligible for selling. However, remember to buy a product that can satisfy at least one of these certificates for your own safety. Normally, there will be a sticker inside the product to tell the buyers which certifications the product has.

Since skating contains so many dangers, especially for children who can easily get out of adults’ supervision, I would like to recommend to you some of the greatest skateboard helmets for kids below.

TRIPLE 8 LIL’ 8 & LITTLE TRICKY ($40 - $45)

The product is manufactured by one of the most popular skateboarding brands - Triple 8 and this model comes with two size ranges for Little Tricky (50 - 56cm) and Lil 8 (46 - 52cm).

Immagine

Though many skaters think it is the best kids skateboard helmet, it is probably the heaviest dual-certified helmet that I have ever known. Therefore, it may be too heavy for small kids to wear and they can find some negative influences on their ability to move freely.

Instead of giving skaters the freedom to adjust the size with a dial-adjust knob, the helmet comes with different sets of pads with non-ideal thickness. Depending on the size of your kid’s head, you should check the size chart to get the right inner pads.

GOTRAX ($19)

If the previous helmet is too heavy, this one is the most lightweight as compared to a standard biking counterpart. The manufacturer is able to maintain the quality of the product with dual certificates and reduce the weight as much as possible.

In comparison with the previous Triple 8 helmet, the GoTrax product is only half of its weight. However, skaters have to sacrifice the longevity of the helmet due to the usage of basic and cheap pads.

BELL SPAN ($55)

This Bell product is definitely a qualified candidate with some interesting features like sealed internal pads, sweat-wicking capability, or the helmet that can fit your head perfectly by using dial-adjust fit. Since this skateboard helmet is designed for children, it only has two sizes of XS and S with a maximum is 55 cm.

THOUSAND JR. ($60)

Kids are always fussy by the eye-catching appearance of this helmet and the product also comes with vegan leather straps or some extra stickers. The most interesting feature is the integrated visor that protects your kids’ eyes from the directed sunlight.

Similar to the previous helmets, the Thousand Jr. product also has the dial-adjust fit and meets both the two popular standards for skateboarding helmets. If your child is bigger than the average, the product may not be suitable because the maximum size is only limited to 53 cm which is equal to the XS Bell Span helmet.

FINAL WORDS

Of course, it is not compulsory to wear skateboarding helmets in most states; however, your health is the number one priority. As you can see, I always suggest products from reliable brands since no one has tested them and given you reviews about the “off-brand” helmets.

According to a study done by Consumer Reports, a part of unqualified skateboard helmets on the market are manufactured by less popular brands. Hence, always purchase helmets from prestigious brands to ensure your own safety.

If you find it hard to find the best brands for your skateboard helmet, the guide at SkateAdvisors which reviews products made by some popular companies in the skateboarding industry will give you a closer look. You should read all the articles written by the author of SkateAdvisors, the author is Robert Parker!
